Tool maintenance

Are you prepared for the gardening season?

Gardening equipment can be expensive but with regular maintenance it should last for many years and continue to work reliably with minimum effort. Follow these top tips to look after your tools and save money by restoring existing tools rather than replacing them.

After every use

  • Remove all dirt from digging tools.
  • After using chemical fertilizers rinse off the metal parts of tools with soap and water to prevent corrosion.

Before storage

  • Rub down with an old towel to make sure tools are clean and dry to prevent rusting and handle rot.
  • Using an oily rag wipe down the metal parts of pruners, shears and loppers.
  • Rub linseed oil into the wooden handle of tools to prevent them from drying out and splintering.
  • Prevent the rusting of shovels, hoes and other digging tools by standing them in a large bucket of builder’s sand mixed with oil.

Maintenance and restoration

  • Use a flat edged file to keep tools sharp and maximise efficiency.
  • To restore a splintered handle, sand down and rub with linseed oil to restore its smooth finish.
  • To remove rust, secure the tool in a clamp, clean with a wire brush, sandpaper and steel wool. Use penetrating oil to help remove those persistent parts.
