My vegetable patch
| I had no experience in vegetable gardening but decided I wanted to give it a go. I wasnt sure where to begin, so decided to do some research before I got started. I thought it might be helpful to share what Ive learnt with my fellow Gardeners Club members, plus I couldnt resist including a photo! | |

Firstly you need a few basic tools; a shovel or hand trowel, a hoe, gardening gloves and a pair of pruners. |
|
| Next its the location; nearly all vegetable plants require at least 6 hours of sunlight each day, so try to choose a sunny spot, youll find it is also useful to locate it close to your house. The size of your vegetable patch is important too; even if you have a lot of space available dont get too ambitious, it is best to start off small at first to see how you get on. | ![]() |
| Next its time to prepare the soil for planting; if you have heavy clay you may need to build raised beds, if youre lucky enough to have rich soil you can begin tilling the soil, removing any roots and weeds as you go, followed by raking to make a smooth bed for the seeds. | |
| Then its finally time to start planting, if like me youre not sure what to grow, then I recommend starting with a list of family favourites. I found beans, cucumbers, peas, potatoes, pumpkins and radishes fairly easy to grow. Dont forget how important it is to keep you patch hydrated, most vegetables need a constant supply of water. | |

I hope Ive been helpful, good luck and have fun, remember practise makes perfect. Helen from Northampton |
