A homemade birdfeeder

How long will it take? Approx. 20 mins

What you'll need

  • Equal quantities of shredded suet and wild bird seed mix, 100g is recommended.
  • Optional Extras; fresh peanuts (ideally from monkey nuts, not toasted, roasted or salted), sunflower seeds, stale cake/cheese, bread crumbs.
  • A small tin, washed and dried or a coconut shell.
  • Saucepan.
  • Wooden spoon.

What you'll need to do

  • Weigh out the suet and melt in the saucepan over a gentle heat.
  • Weigh out an equal quantity of bird seed, adding any extras you wish to include.
  • When the fat has turned to liquid, turn off and remove from the heat.
  • Stir in the seeds and your extras, it should be a sticky consistency so that the mixture will stay together when it cools.
  • Leave it to cool slightly.
  • Transfer your mixture into your tin or coconut shell.
  • Let it cool thoroughly so the mixture can set.

Making a bird feeder for with the kids

When it's set it's time to put it in the garden. You can tie it to a tree with string or wedge it into a branch of a tree.

Ideally choose somewhere that can be seen from inside your house to keep your kids interested, so they can easily see who's coming to eat from their birdfeeder and when it starts running low you can get making another one.
