Lottery funded garden restoration

Myddelton House, in Bull’s Cross, Enfield was home to the renowned British horticulturalist, writer and botanical illustrator, Edward Augustus Bowles from 1865 to 1954. Bowles was born at the property and lived there his whole life, during this time he created various gardens, including a Victorian Kitchen Garden and a Rose Garden. The gardens and grounds of this North London Estate are set to be restored using a £487,500 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The project will hopefully be complete in two years and then open to the public, free of charge. Not only will you be able to see the many different garden areas, you will also come across Mr Bowles’s potting shed, pond and stonework, they also hope to create a heritage centre on site, if this isn’t enough you will also be able to see the national collection of Bearded Iris, rarely seen artefacts and historic photos.

We’re sure the restoration of the gardens, once belonging to a plant breeder with more than 40 plant varieties named after him, will be worth the wait.
